Driveway and Motor Court Lighting: A Professional Guide
The driveway and motor court is the first spatial experience of your property — before the front door, before the landscape planting, the approach sets the tone for everything that follows. Lighting this space correctly is one of the highest-impact investments in residential landscape lighting.
Four Approaches to Driveway Lighting
1. Ground-Stake C9 or M5 Lines (Holiday and Permanent)
For holiday use, ground stakes with C9 bulbs flanking the full driveway length create one of the most elegant entry effects in residential lighting. For permanent year-round use, low-voltage path light stakes in a staggered pattern provide consistent illumination without the seasonal character.
2. Bollard Lights
Bollard-style fixtures (24–36 inch posts with integrated LED modules) provide both pathway illumination and vertical visual interest along the driveway edge. They work best on straight driveways with clear sightlines — a curved driveway benefits more from path lighting that follows the curve.
3. In-Ground Well Lights at Entry Pillars
If your driveway has entry pillars or stone columns at the gate or property entrance, in-ground well lights uplighting each pillar create a dramatic entry statement. The in-ground fixtures are flush with the paving surface — no obstruction to vehicles — and the uplight transforms the pillar from a daytime structural element to an illuminated architectural landmark at night.
4. Gate Lighting
Automated or manual entry gates benefit from integrated lighting: wall-mounted sconces flanking the gate keypad, in-ground uplights on the gate posts, and address number lighting that makes the property clearly identifiable from the street.
Motor Court Lighting
A motor court — the paved or paved-and-gravel area in front of a detached garage or porte-cochere — benefits from perimeter uplighting on the surrounding plantings, in-ground uplights on any specimen plants or sculpture in the court, and overhead lighting under the porte-cochere structure if one is present. The goal is even, low-level illumination throughout the court without harsh shadows or dark corners.
